Metaphor establishes an individual world outlook by transferring meaning from one word to another, by simultaneously bringing to mind the inherent properties of two objects belonging to different phenomena. Traditionally, metaphors are regarded as ornamental devices used in rhetorical style. However, cognitive linguists state that metaphors are powerful cognitive tools for conceptualization of abstract categories. This means that metaphors are not just a way of expressing ideas by means of language, but a way of thinking about things. The essence of metaphor lies in the interaction between a metaphorical expression and the context in which it is used. From a cognitive point of view, what is transferred by a metaphorical model - is the structure, the internal relations or the logic of a cognitive model. From a cognitive perspective a metaphor is the transfer of the structure from a source model onto a target model. According to the source category there have been pointed out a number of metaphorical models of economic notions in French and Russian scientific and publicistic texts: anthropocentric. transport-mechanic, physical, spatial, culture-grounded, etc. The analysis of metaphors in both languages suggests that cognitive models of abstract economic phenomena are grounded in basic experiences of French and Russian people. The investigation shows that the main source of the metaphorical model "mechanism' in French is "motor" which is usually positively colored in creating the image of economic progress of the country. The anthropocentric metaphorical model in French uses the image of a woman in different periods of her life which leads to a versatile expression and understanding of the current economic development. As for the models based on symbols, color, myths, etc, they manifest national and cultural peculiarities. National stereotypes account for differences, incoincidences in the choice of images conveying economic notions in the languages. Thus discrepances in metaphorical representation of economic notions may be found in the choice of source and target categories due to people's peculiar mentality, experience and various world description.
